Il s’apparente à une chasse à l’oie sauvage, mais non, il s’agit d’une histoire de grenouilles. On pensait qu’il était éteint, mais maintenant la recherche est en cours. Nous avons un enregistrement de l’appel de cette rare grenouille peinte et nous allons chasser dans les zones humides d’Aammiq au Liban pour voir si elle est là. Nous avons quelques petites boîtes intelligentes qui contiennent un petit ordinateur, un microphone et des piles AA. Ces appareils peuvent être configurés pour enregistrer les sons qu’ils entendent dans les différentes zones de la réserve naturelle, partout où nous pensons qu’il pourrait y avoir certaines de ces grenouilles. Nous avons configuré l’appareil pour qu’il se réveille toutes les 15 minutes et enregistre pendant cinq minutes. De cette façon, nous obtenons un fichier sonore de cinq minutes quatre fois par heure.
Allons donc dans les zones humides d’Aammiq, dans la région occidentale de Beqaa.
Les zones humides d’Aamiq, situées dans la vallée de la Bekaa au Liban, sont un refuge vital reconnu mondialement pour les oiseaux migrateurs, car ils traversent cette vallée fertile lors de leurs migrations vers et depuis l’Afrique et l’Europe de l’Est chaque printemps et chaque automne. Il appartient à la famille Skaff et a été restauré dans les années 2000 grâce à une coopération avec A Rocha Liban.
Tôt le matin, il est très reposant d’arriver ici, après s’être échappé de Beyrouth.
C’est un endroit magnifique, cette vallée fertile entre les montagnes.
Nous sommes à 900m au-dessus du niveau de la mer, et au loin, nous pouvons même voir le mont Hermon, qui est surmonté d’une nouvelle chute de neige.
Nous avons plusieurs types d’habitats à étudier. Il y a les grandes roselières, mais l’endroit le plus probable est un long canal de drainage, où il y a déjà eu une observation suspectée.
Partout, j’entends des grenouilles appeler. Surtout si le temps est chaud, mais cela pourrait être trompeur car on sait si peu de choses sur cette espèce. Nous ne savons pas si la présence d’autres grenouilles est réellement négative. Cette espèce peut préférer être quelque part où il y a moins d’autres grenouilles. Tout ce que nous savons, c’est que la grenouille peinte ne vit pas dans l’eau, mais appelle à l’accouplement à partir de là. Donc, je place des dispositifs dans différents endroits partout dans la zone humide.
Parfois, nous pouvons les fixer à une branche, mais d’autres fois, nous les montons sur un bâton.
Après cinq ou six jours, le moment est venu de récupérer les appareils, alors je peux revenir et marcher dans la réserve pour trouver les appareils. Si je dois oublier où je les ai placés, j’ai enregistré les coordonnées GPS, et j’ai aussi des photos de chaque endroit.
Après avoir récupéré les cinq appareils, je retourne à la voiture et sors les petites cartes SD et les remplace par des cartes vierges. Les batteries doivent être changées, puis les appareils doivent être reconfigurés, car la configuration est perdue lorsque les batteries sont retirées.
Un jour, nous avons eu des jeunes qui nous ont rendu visite pour voir ce qui se passait.
Oui, nous avons vu des grenouilles ici, bien que je les ai entendues plus que je ne les ai vues.
Il y a aussi des Terrapins, et ils font beaucoup de bruit quand ils s’écrasent à travers les roseaux et plongent dans l’eau quand ils m’entendent approcher. Les fleurs sont magnifiques aussi!
Après avoir mis à jour les appareils et pris un verre de café, il est temps de se promener dans la réserve et de les placer dans de nouveaux endroits.
